Title -> Laments in the Silence
Author -> Giorgio Vittorio Prudenzano

Synopsis
Diego, a 15-year-old boy, is passionate about video games. Every evening he logs on with his friends online, using a headset with a microphone to play team games and chat. Diego, however, has always lived somewhat on the sidelines: in his everyday life he does not have many friends and finds in the virtual world a way to escape.
One evening, while playing, he begins to hear voices. They are not part of the game, nor do they come from his friends, but sound like faint laments or distorted whispers. At first he thinks they are just interference, but the feeling is unsettling. He does not tell anyone right away, afraid of seeming strange or immature. His mind begins to waver: is it only his imagination, or is there something more sinister at work?
Central Theme
The protagonist’s adolescent loneliness and psychological fragility intertwine with the disturbing presence of dark entities emerging from the digital world, creating a psychological and supernatural horror story.
Characters
Diego (Protagonist), age 15
Personality: Diego is an introverted and sensitive boy, but beneath the surface he has a deep vulnerability. His passion for video games comes from his desire to escape a reality that makes him feel disconnected from the world. He is intelligent, but struggles to relate to people in real life because of his loneliness and shyness.
Within the horror story, Diego may at first seem like a “normal boy,” but his psychology is marked by past trauma, perhaps linked to the loss of a family member or a traumatic event he has not yet processed. The voices he hears are a kind of external manifestation of that inner suffering he has never faced. The virtual world becomes a refuge, but also a trap, because it is precisely there that the portal to a terror he cannot stop will open.
Main traits:

Vulnerable but determined, he begins to fight to solve the mystery of the voices.

He is tormented by doubt: is it all in his head, or is there truly something evil haunting him?

His inner growth concerns not only the fear that becomes more and more real, but also the need to accept his past in order to close the portal he has unknowingly opened.
Federico (Closest friend, “the voice of reason”), age 15
Personality: Federico is Diego’s best friend, with whom he plays online every day. He is sociable, very self-confident, and tends to take everything with a smile. He is the kind of person who tries to keep the group together and solve problems with a joke or practical advice. However, Federico is skeptical and does not believe in the paranormal or the unexplainable, and at first he thinks Diego is simply going through stress or adolescent paranoia.
Federico will be the character who tries to bring Diego back to reality, but he will never fully understand what he is going through. This makes him more tragic as the voices and the entity grow more intense. When the truth begins to emerge, Federico will struggle to accept that something dark is threatening his friend, but his skepticism will delay him from taking concrete action.
Main traits:

Skeptical and pragmatic, he does not initially believe in the voices.

A loyal friend, but unable to understand the true reasons for Diego’s suffering.

In the end, he may become involved in real danger linked to the entity, forcing him to confront the reality of horror.
Gemma (Friend in the group, rational but curious), age 15
Personality: Gemma is the character who stands between Federico and Diego. She is intelligent and very curious, but also somewhat introverted. She shares an emotionally complicit bond with Diego, and even though she does not know him well enough to truly understand his fears, she realizes that something is wrong. She is more empathetic and sensitive than Federico, but she does not immediately believe that Diego is experiencing something paranormal. Still, her instinct pushes her to investigate what is happening. Gemma becomes the character who comes closest to the truth, sensing that the voices may be connected to something ancient or occult. She has a connection with the human psyche that leads her to understand that the game may conceal a dark power.
Main traits:

Rational but curious, she is more open to exploring the unknown.

Her intuition and curiosity will lead her to discover the roots of the entity, but also to put herself in danger.

She is also the friend who tries to support Diego in a more empathetic way, encouraging him to talk about his trauma.
The Voices (Mysterious Entity)
Personality: The voices Diego hears are not just random noises, but an intelligent and malicious presence, capable of manipulating and manifesting itself through the game. They do not simply repeat phrases, but speak in an increasingly personal way, as if they know all of Diego’s deepest secrets. The entity may be the tormented soul of someone who died, but found a way to remain trapped in the game and in Diego’s reality, exploiting his emotional vulnerability.
These voices, which at first seem like faint whispers, grow louder and sharper as Diego gets closer to the truth. They are dark, threatening, but also present themselves as if they are offering salvation, trying to manipulate Diego into believing that only by listening to them can he free himself from his inner pain. The voices become a symbol of temptation and self-sabotage.
Main traits:

The entity is dark and manipulative, but strives to appear familiar and reassuring to Diego.

The voices are threatening and provocative, speaking about his unprocessed trauma in an attempt to destabilize him.

Its development reaches a new stage when the entity finally becomes physical, revealing itself through the game, not as a simple “ghost in the machine,” but as an infernal manifestation.
Conflict
The main conflict in Laments in the Silence is not only the external one, involving the entity and the voices, but also Diego’s internal struggle. The psychological conflict within him is strong: Diego’s fight is not only against a malicious entity, but also against his own mental fragility and psyche, which are undermined by the voices and digital distortions.
1. Initial conflict (internal and external)

The conflict begins with the voices Diego hears, at first almost imperceptible, but increasingly invasive and dark. Instead of pulling away from the game, Diego is drawn to these voices, as if they were a means of exploring his inner loneliness. His inability to distinguish reality from the game is the first major psychological conflict.

As the external conflict takes hold, namely the presence of the digital entity, Diego must struggle with his need to control the chaos developing inside him. The voices whisper secrets and disturbing revelations that make him question his mental health. Diego begins to wonder if he is truly going mad, fueling his inner conflict: Am I losing my mind, or is something evil really happening to me?
2. Revelation and discovery
At a certain point, Diego realizes that the voices are not merely a product of his imagination or a disorder, but something far more malignant and ancient. The discovery that the voices are trapped entities, or worse, a form of digital evil capable of possessing his reality, intensifies the conflict. Diego understands that the game is only the medium, while the real battle is surviving the entity’s psychological and physical manipulation.
Development
In the development, the tension and horror element must increase, making every step Diego takes more dangerous and disturbing.
1. Approaching the truth
Diego begins looking for answers. But the closer he gets to the truth, the louder and more threatening the voices become. The horror element begins to emerge concretely, with his friends starting to notice strange phenomena: objects moving on their own, flickering lights, or even collective hallucinations, where Diego’s friends begin to hear the voices, though never in the same way he does.

The distortion of reality becomes a key theme. The images in the game are no longer just glitches, but reflect the nightmare unfolding in the real world. The boundaries between the virtual and the physical become increasingly thin and difficult to define.

The presence of the entity becomes palpable in the physical world as well. Diego may hear other sounds: footsteps, breathing, dull knocks in the walls, as if something were moving in the dark, only to discover that it is the result of mental manipulation by the entity invading his mind.
2. Psychological isolation
Diego drifts farther and farther from reality, while his perceptions and the voices become increasingly invasive and threatening. His friends begin to doubt him, placing him in a condition of total isolation. He starts to feel trapped, as though he alone were living through this experience. The entity begins manipulating him psychologically, making him believe that if he does not listen, he will lose control.

The fear of going insane becomes the most developed psychological element. Diego begins to distrust what he sees and hears, while the voices try to manipulate his mind. This could culminate in a scene where Diego, no longer able to distinguish dream from reality, sees a horrifying distortion of his world: his reflection in a mirror might deform, or he might see a twisted version of himself standing before him, mocking him.
Climax
The climax is the peak of the conflict between reality and nightmare, where Diego finally confronts the entity and his inner fears, though not without a twist that leaves an indelible mark. The climax should be psychologically devastating, but also physically dangerous.
1. Final confrontation with the entity
Diego, now completely consumed by paranoia and nightmare, finds himself forced to confront the virtual and physical worlds, which have become hopelessly entangled. The headset and the game become the final portal to the entity. During the climax, the game and reality completely overlap, creating a terrifying illusion in which Diego can no longer distinguish where the game ends and where his life begins.

In this scene, Diego must choose whether to surrender completely to the entity or fight the horror and close the portal by confronting his trauma directly. The struggle is not only physical, but a true psychological battle: Diego’s mind is the battlefield. The voices are now entities that torture him, taking the form of nightmares.
2. The twist
Before Diego can conclude his battle, there is a twist: Diego may discover that the entity is tied to a trauma from his past, the death of a relative or friend he had erased from his memory. His victory depends not only on destroying the entity, but on confronting his past.
3. Open ending (Psychological horror)
Even if Diego seems to prevail, the entity may not be completely destroyed, leaving a sense of doubt and unease. The ending could suggest that the entity has been temporarily sealed away, but may one day return. The final scene might show Diego, returning home after the incident, hearing one last voice whisper to him: “We are waiting for you…”
Final Outcome
With a climax that blends the struggle against a malevolent entity with the confrontation of inner trauma, the horror element is destined to grow to its peak, while Diego faces his deepest fears in both a digital and physical setting. Everything culminates in an ambiguous ending that leaves the door open to psychological terror.
Appendix
Other Possible Secondary Characters
Diego’s Father
A distant man, always busy with work, who does not have a close relationship with Diego. He only appears in moments of necessity, but his emotional absence has had a deep impact on the boy. He could be the unwitting vehicle through which the voices reach Diego, for example through the death of a relative or an accident connected to the father. His figure will be important in explaining Diego’s psychological trauma, even if he is not a central character.
Technician or Expert (optional)
If Diego decides to seek outside help, an expert technician or a paranormal “guru” could enter the scene. This character would help reveal the truth behind the digital portal, but perhaps at
a cost. He or she could be an ambiguously “helpful” or “dubious” figure who seems to know more than they reveal.
Psychological Developments in the Characters

Diego must confront his inner fears and his inability to communicate his feelings. The voices he hears are the manifestation of what he cannot express or face.

Federico, the rational one, becomes the character who questions Diego’s reality, but also the friend who becomes increasingly disoriented as the truth emerges.

Gemma, the more sensitive one, is also the one who risks getting too close to the darkness, endangering her own safety in order to save Diego.
Development and Horror Turn
1. Beginning and Introduction of Horror
The story begins with Diego, 15, playing online with his friends, but the voices he begins to hear are no longer simple interference. At first they are just laments and whispers, weak and almost imperceptible. But the more Diego ignores them, the louder, clearer, and more distorted they become. One night, while he is playing, one of the voices seems to repeat: “You cannot escape.”
2. Progression of the Mystery
At a certain point, during a particularly intense game, Diego hears a voice calling him by name, in a tone that seems full of anguish. The voices become increasingly invasive and contain phrases referring to events from his past life that Diego does not remember, but which begin to torment him. Some voices even seem to speak about him, as if the entity had access to his most hidden thoughts and forgotten memories.
3. The Interference and the First Contact
A sudden burst of interference cuts off the flow of the game. The voices then seem to come from something external, as if they were traveling through the internet connection, not just through Diego’s microphone. It is as though the entity can infiltrate his mind through the game and the headset. The tension rises when Diego begins to notice that the image quality of the game itself starts to distort: the lights blur, the colors become unsettling, the shadows grow too long.
4. The Awakening of the Entity
One day, while Diego is playing with his friends, the voices are no longer faint, but become shrill and threatening, as if they were screaming to get his attention. One of the voices begins to speak in a monstrous tone: “We are watching you.”
From that moment on, the game is no longer just a pastime. The boundary between reality and the game becomes more and more fragile. Diego realizes that these are no longer
technical interferences. The voices begin speaking directly to him, suggesting that he do things he does not want to do. Sometimes they seem to tell him to look in a specific direction in the room, or to get out of bed. And when he does, his gaze lands exactly where something shocking is hidden, but never seen before.
5. The Truth Hidden in the Past
Diego discovers that the voices are not just a psychological disturbance or a manifestation of his stress, but are connected to something paranormal and profound. The voices belong to dead people, victims of accidents, including one of Diego’s relatives, perhaps a brother or sister he never knew. These souls are trapped in the “game,” a world between life and death that Diego is unknowingly summoning through his headset and the game. The voices are nothing more than restless souls trying to interact with him.
6. The Nightmare Becomes Real
Diego’s growing obsession with the voices leads him to a terrible experience. One night, while playing, the headset emits a piercing sound. Suddenly, the game image freezes, and a distorted figure appears on the screen, a kind of digital manifestation of the entity tormenting him. But it is not only an image: the figure emerges from the screen, as if it were capable of entering reality. Diego’s room becomes a ghostly place, with flickering lights and disturbing shadows.
7. The Peak of Horror
Diego realizes that the voices are connected to a malevolent entity with the power to take shape through the digital world. The headset is not just a communication device, but a portal. The entity has begun manipulating Diego’s reality, making it impossible to distinguish what is digital from what is physical. The entity’s presence is so strong that the things Diego sees in the game begin to reflect themselves in the real world, and the voices take form around him.
8. The Final Battle
Diego will have to confront the entity directly, trying to close the portal he opened through the game. The struggle becomes psychological and physical: Diego must decide whether to abandon the game forever or face the demons of his past, now unleashed and ready to destroy him and everyone around him.
Conclusion
Diego manages to close the portal, but not without consequences. The voices disappear, but the sense that something has remained, that the entity is still alive in the game, stays with him. Just when Diego thinks it is finally over, he hears one last voice whisper, this time with chilling clarity: “We are waiting for you…”
Tone and Atmosphere (Horror)
The film has a strong atmosphere of suspense and paranoia, with a gradual escalation of tension. Diego’s perception of reality becomes more and more distorted as the story progresses, leading the audience to believe that everything may be in his head, until the horror becomes physical and tangible. The boundary between the virtual and real worlds becomes thin, and the horror draws power from the protagonist’s loneliness and increasing vulnerability. The voices, initially harmless, become a palpable nightmare that haunts him.
Possible Alternative Ideas
1. The video game was never installed
Diego discovers that the game from which the voices originate does not appear to be installed on his PC. No trace, no files, no history. But the game is there. Every time he tries to delete it, it reinstalls itself. This leads him to wonder: is it a program... or a presence?
2. The voices come from real people… but from the future
Through a glitch in the game, Diego discovers that the voices he hears belong to real players, but none of them are dead yet, only about to die, and they are trying to communicate with him to prevent it. The problem? Every time he manages to save one, someone else disappears.
3. The game is playing him
At a key moment, Diego realizes that he is not the one playing, but that the game is playing with him. His actions in the real world begin to mirror those of a digital avatar controlled by an unknown entity. He is a puppet inside a larger system. Someone else is holding the joystick.
4. The disturbing and silent ending
After the final battle, Diego wins. Or at least he thinks so. He goes to sleep, exhausted, in a silent room. But when he wakes up, the microphone is on. On the screen appears the message: “New player connected.” Then a whisper: “Your turn.” Cut to black
